When buying pants from an online shop, the one thing you don't want to get wrong is the waist size.

How to Measure Your Actual Waist Size (Unisex)

How to measure waist size

The way to measure your waist is the same for both men and women.

Let’s get right into the steps for measuring.

Waist Position and Measurement Method

The waist refers to the narrowest part of your midsection.

So, how exactly do you go about measuring it? Let’s walk through the procedure.

① Stand straight with your back upright.

② Wrap a flexible tape measure around the narrowest part of your waist.

③ Measure while breathing naturally, at the end of an exhale.

That’s it.

While it sounds simple, there are a few things to keep in mind.

Things to keep in mind when measuring your waist

First, the tape measure must be parallel to the ground, so it is best to check in a mirror while measuring.

Ideally, you should have someone else measure you while you stand with your arms naturally at your sides. If you are doing it yourself, be sure to remain standing straight without raising your shoulders.

The tape shouldn't be so loose that it sags, but it shouldn't be so tight that it digs into your skin either...

If you are self-conscious about your waistline, you might be tempted to pull it tight, but if you buy pants based on that number and they don't fit, it’ll be a disaster. Don't try to cheat; just measure honestly.

Can I measure without a tape measure?

I’m not sure if there’s anyone who doesn't have a tape measure, but if you don't, you can wrap a piece of string (non-stretchy material) around your waist and then measure that with a ruler to get your size.

However, be prepared for some minor inaccuracies in this case.

Also, some people try to measure by placing their hands around their waist like an inchworm because they know the length of their hands, but this is prone to errors, so we don't recommend it...

Your "waist" is not the same as your "abdominal circumference"!

As an aside, you know how medical exams often measure your "abdominal circumference"?

Many people think this is the same as the waistline, but strictly speaking, it is different.

The waist is the "narrowest part of your midsection," while the abdominal circumference is measured "around the navel"!

So, remember that they are measuring around your navel during a health checkup.

How to determine waist size using pants you already own

How to measure waist size

Now that you know how to measure your own waist, does that mean you can apply that number to every pair of pants you want to buy? Not necessarily.

If you are buying high-waisted pants, the waistband will sit at your natural waist, so measuring your actual waist is fine.

However, low-rise jeans sit much lower on the body, so if you use your actual waist measurement, they will likely be too small.

So, how should you determine the waist size for buying pants?

The best way is to measure a pair of pants you already own that fits well and has a similar shape!

Whether it’s low-rise skinny jeans, high-waisted wide-leg pants, or loose tapered pants, find a pair in your closet that is as similar as possible to the item you are looking to purchase.

Zip or button them up, lay them flat (on the floor), and measure the waistband with a tape measure.

This figure is the "flat measurement." Double it, and you have the waist size of those pants.

Since you can measure them easily while they are lying flat, this is even simpler than measuring your own body!

In reality, there are no zippers, but this is a deliberate design choice. Because the front doesn't have the bulk of a zipper, it drapes nicely, creating a laid-back, loose feel.

The drape and the length of the hem are also calculated so you can enjoy wearing them in a cute, relaxed, and stylish way.

By rolling up the cuffs, you can create a sophisticated hemline, and showing off your socks or ankles is a great way to add color or a cool look to your outfit.
